The EcoSystem Aquarium Revisited

چکیده

One way I judge how an article has been received is by how many letters or phone calls I get about it. Judging by the number of requests for more information on the Ecosystem Aquarium Filtration method, developed by Leng Sy, that I have received since writing articles in both Aquarium Fish Magazine (November 1997) and SeaScope (Fall 1997), I really struck a nerve. There are probably a number of reasons for this, but perhaps the biggest is the simplicity of the system itself and the little amount of maintenance that is required.

An introduction to freshwater aquarium plants

Freshwater aquarium plants are one of the most popular components in freshwater aquariums. The aquarium plant trade is a lucrative trade in its producer countries. In fact, the aquarium is a closed and controlled environment that coordination between all its components is necessary to maintain the balance and stability of this small ecosystem. They beautify the interior of the aquarium, moreove...

Invasive aquarium fish transform ecosystem nutrient dynamics.

Trade of ornamental aquatic species is a multi-billion dollar industry responsible for the introduction of myriad fishes into novel ecosystems. Although aquarium invaders have the potential to alter ecosystem function, regulation of the trade is minimal and little is known about the ecosystem-level consequences of invasion for all but a small number of aquarium species. Here, we demonstrate how...

Aquarium Viromes: Viromes of Human-Managed Aquatic Systems

An aquarium ecosystem is home to many animal species providing conditions similar to native aquatic habitats but under highly controlled management. With a growing interest in understanding the interaction of microbiomes and resident animal health within aquarium environments, we undertook a metagenomic survey of viromes in seven aquarium systems with differing physicochemical and resident anim...

A hotspot of non-native marine fishes: evidence for the aquarium trade as an invasion pathway

Invasions of non-native species in marine ecosystems can be ecologically damaging and economically costly. Identifying ‘hot-spots’ of non-native species and their sources of introduction is necessary to maximize the effectiveness of invasion quarantine programs. We use a large spatially explicit marine fish database to show that there are a surprising number of non-native fishes on the reefs of...

Genetic Relationships among Invasive Hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata L.f. Royle) Biotypes in the US and Their Implications for Management

INTRODUCTION: Hydrilla verticillata L.f. Royle (hydrilla; Hydrocharitaceae), an invasive submersed plant native to Southeast Asia and Australia, was first introduced into the US through the aquarium trade in Florida in the 1950s (Schmitz et al. 1991). Hydrilla impacts freshwater resources in the US by its aggressive, canopy-forming growth that degrades aquatic ecosystems, limits recreation, fou...
